JELLY ROLL RUG SUPPLY LIST

Bosal Katahdin On-A-Roll 100% Organic Cotton Batting 2.5 X 50 yds.  (This will be enough to make to rugs.

One Jelly Roll – 40 Strips (I used the Dragonfly by XXX and then divided it in half for two rugs)

Thread (I used a neutral color, grey.  The rug will go from light to dark.  You can change the thread as you go along, but it is much easier to stay with the same color thread.)

Sewing Machine with a Zigzag function and foot that will allow for the zigzag.  Some rug makers prefer to use a walking foot but it’s not necessary.  I’ve made rugs with and without the walking foot.

Extension table for your machine (optional- but helps.  I have other things I will bring along so we can keep our rug flat around the machine.)

Before class have a minimum of 3 filled bobbins of the thread you will be using.  The zigzag takes a lot of thread and you will need to switch out your bobbins as we create the rug.

Pre-work

Before class, separate jelly roll into two piles of 20 strips.  (Since most jelly rolls have at least two strips of the same color, I put one into each pile.  If there is a third, I will add to the first pile, and then when I come to another three strips of the same kind the first pile will get one and the second pile two.)  After separating into the two piles, take your first pile and sew short ends together at a 45-degree angle.  Trim seam to ¼” and press seam open.  Continue until you have the 20 pieces sewn together.  Using an empty toilet paper roll, tape one end to roll and roll your 20-piece strip around the role.
